Press release: Cabbies and war veterans on full steam for Bluebell Railway trip

Scores of WWII veterans are heading to the Bluebell Railway for a day to remember along with their families and friends on Tuesday 19 July. A convoy of London cabs will transport the war heroes from the capital to the railway’s southern terminal at Sheffield Park for a trip on a heritage stream train, with entertainers and singers in 1940s-style dress. The trip has been organised by London’s Taxi Charity – full name, The London Taxi Benevolent Association For War Disabled, who will pick up the veterans, their carers and spouses from their homes across the capital, aiming to arrive at Sheffield Park by 11am. The charity has booked out the entire train, which will depart at 12.05pm for East Grinstead. It will then return to Kingscote station where the veterans will be treated to a hero’s lunch of sausage and chips, before returning to Sheffield Park at approximately 3.30pm. Event organiser and committee member, Dick Goodwin said: “We are looking forward to a great day out and treating the lads and ladies to a memorable trip with lots of laughs along the way.” The Taxi Charity, which is run almost entirely by volunteer London cabbies, works throughout the year to provide outings, events and camaraderie to the capital’s war heroes. Volunteer collectors, many of them in their 90s, turn-out in all weathers throughout the year to fundraise for the charity at tube and mainline stations. The charity received a funding boost from the National Lottery for a trip last year to The Netherlands to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Dutch liberation and is a finalist in this year’s National Lottery Awards. The winners will be decided by public vote, which ends at midnight on Wednesday 20 July. Updates and pictures from the trip will be posted on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
