WWII veterans Fred Glover and Geoff Pattinson and volunteer committee members from the London Taxi Benevolent Association for War Disabled charity (aka the Taxi Charity) attended a red-carpet event which was televised to millions on BBC One this week. The Taxi Charity received the award in the Best Voluntary/Charity Project category of the National Lottery Awards. Run almost entirely by working or retired London taxi drivers who provide outings and events for war veterans, the charity received £42,000 from the National Lottery in 2015 to help fund a trip to the Netherlands to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Holland. The team met with celebrities including John Barrowman, Rav Wilding, Ralf Little, Kimberly Wyatt, Katie Derham and many of the Team GB Olympic heroes at the event. A short film about the charity featuring a visit from Katie Derham, who presented the award was shown as part of the programme. The charity received a £3,000 prize plus an iconic trophy. Many thanks to the other service charities, including Help for Heroes, whose support helped the charity to gain the most public votes. The programme can be viewed on the BBC iPlayer:
