Kaye Thorpe
Taxi Charity Ambassador
Kaye Thorpe has been part of the Taxi Charity for many years, attending trips to Normandy and the Netherlands with her Uncle, D-Day veteran Bill Gladden, who is greatly missed by everyone at the charity.
Kaye was asked to become an ambassador in October 2024 and says:
“I will always remember the joy on my Uncle Bill’s face whenever we went on Taxi Charity trips; the amount of love and respect all the people associated with the charity showed to him and the other veterans was overwhelming.
The trips are full of precious moments, but those that really stand out and made me so very proud, were seeing Uncle Bill representing D-Day veterans by sharing readings and poems at the Pegasus Museum service of remembrance in Normandy; being with him for the unveiling of the Glider Pilot Memorial in June 2023; and when, in the middle of Oosterbeek Cemetery in the Netherlands he sang ‘We’ll Meet Again’.
My own proudest moment was when I laid a wreath on Uncle Bill’s behalf at Ranville Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery on the 80th anniversary of D-Day in 2024.
I was so shocked and surprised, but very honoured to have been asked to be an ambassador. I will do whatever I can to help and support our dear veterans to continue to go on these wonderful trips which brings them so much joy. This charity does such an amazing job and I feel so proud to be a part of it.”
